Cardio Tennis
To the rhythmic beat of aerobics music, the newest fitness programme to hit the UK, cardio tennis, is arriving in Bexley in April.
You do not need to be able to play tennis as the courses will be tailored to suit non-players as well as those who can play a good game, but it’s a fun way to get on court and get some exercise.
The emphasis is on fitness, not forehands, and to get the exercise levels just right, professional tennis coach, John Hoskins, will run the course.
Cllr Peter Catterall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Tourism, says: “For complete beginners or for those who need to become fit after a lay off or rehabilitation, the emphasis will be on taking things at their own pace with simulated tennis movements to music. The fitter and more proficient will practise hitting balls and staging rallies on the beat.”
Cardio tennis is a new, fun group activity featuring drills to give players of all abilities an ultimate, high energy workout. Taught by a licensed Lawn Tennis Association Coach, cardio tennis includes a warm-up, cardio workout, and cool down phases. If you are looking for a great new way to get in shape and to burn calories, try it out.
There are programmes and drills geared for existing players to get a great cardio workout while improving skill. If you are a beginner, there are specific programmes for you. Cardio tennis is much more fun than working out in a gym.
Participants consistently elevate their heart rates into their aerobic training zone. They get short cycles of high intensity workouts and periods of rest, almost like interval training. While you are playing tennis, the focus is primarily on getting a great workout. Players naturally improve their game because they hit so many balls and repeat various shots.
The programme, which is supported by Bexley Council, will be run at Russell Park, Long Lane, Bexleyheath. There will be an initial six-week course and rackets will be provided.
