MP IN CANAL CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN
Local MP, John Austin, put on his Wellie boots and rubber gloves when he joined volunteers working with the Charity, Thames21, in cleaning up the Canal and surrounding areas in Thamesmead Town Centre on Saturday.
John Austin said: “Thamesmead has one of the largest systems of canals in Europe and they are rich in wild-life. The canals and the surrounding areas are vital local green spaces for people to enjoy and use. It is sad that due to the irresponsible actions of some there are high levels of litter, fly-tipping and vandalism which drive some people away as the areas look neglected and unsafe. Thames21’s drive to reduce litter by getting local people involved in its work is an important part of the strategy to bring Thamesmead’s waterways to life”
John Austin was joined by Greenwich Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Peter Brooks, a Thamesmead resident who represents the Thamesmead Moorings Ward which includes the Town Centre.
Working with Thamesmead’s River Keeper, Geoff Williams, their haul from the stretch of Butts Canal between the two bridges in the Town Centre at Joyce Dawson Way included a shopping trolley, two bicycles, several road-works barriers, two large cash boxes, a litter bin, six traffic cones, three rat traps and dozens of drink cans and plastic bags. Volunteers also cleared the banks of the canals of large volumes of litter.
Whilst working, the volunteers were treated to a visit from two black Australian Swans which have been breeding locally, and who arrived with their young cygnets.
Cylinder incident in Abbey Wood
Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to a fire to tackle a blaze at a disused builder’s yard on Sewell Road in Abbey Wood on the 30th March. The fire damaged a small amount of the yard and there were two propane cylinders involved in the incident.
Some types of gas cylinders can explode up to 24 hours or more after being exposed to heat and a hazard zone was set up while the cylinder was being cooled. Around fifty residents were evacuated from surrounding properties and were taken to a local community centre.
The Brigade was called at 16.31 and the fire was under control by 18.17. Fire crews from Plumstead and Erith fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
