CONCERNS OVER TRANSIT DELAY
Transport for London is planning to run a bus based rapid transit system named Greenwich Waterfront Transit, between Abbey Wood and Greenwich town centre via Woolwich and North Greenwich.

Greenwich Council has approved in principle Phase 1 of the route following public consultations in 2004 and 2005

Phase 1 includes

• a main route between Abbey Wood station and Woolwich

• an interim route running on existing roads to North Greenwich.

Its thought passengers will experience an improvement in bus travel with the Greenwich Waterfront Transit:

• faster, more frequent and more reliable service

• new bus shelters

• well-lit waiting areas

• better service information.

and the service will interchange with London Underground, DLR and National Rail.

But following a meeting with Peter Hendy, Transport Commissioner for London, at the House of Commons last week, Erith & Thamesmead’s MP, John Austin, has written to the Mayor of London to express his concerns about possible delays to the Greenwich Waterfront Transit (GWT)

John Austin said: “At the meeting of London Labour MPs with Peter Hendy, I argued for the new transit to be up and running before the opening of the Docklands Light Railway extension to Woolwich. I was very concerned to learn from Mr Hendy that there had been some delays and that the transit might not be delivered on time. This is very bad news for Thamesmead which is so poorly served with transport links and has a rapidly expanding population”

In a subsequent letter to Mr Hendy and Mayor, Ken Livingstone, John Austin says “Virtually no additional services have been provided for the substantial new growth in housing in Thamesmead and we desperately need the GWT to give local people access to the DLR and the Jubilee Line in Greenwich” and he has called for the introduction of a rapid/express, limited stop bus link from Thamesmead to North Greenwich as an interim measure. He has welcomed recent news that the 472 service will be increased.

£1,000 Fine for Selling Fireworks to Under-Age Boy
An Erith shopkeeper, Melanie Jane Castleton, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £400 costs by Bexley Magistrates on 15 March after being found guilty of three counts of supplying fireworks to someone under 18 on 23 October 2006.

The charges were brought under the Fireworks (Safety) Regulations1997 and the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

As part of a crackdown on sales to under-age children, Bexley Trading Standards officers sent a 15-year-old boy into Fireworks 4 Less, Parkside Parade, Northend Road, Erith, in the run-up to bonfire night 2006. He was able to make one purchase of a box of fireworks and was given two fireworks free.

Castleton, of Hurstwood Avenue, Erith, did not appear at the hearing and was found guilty in her absence. The fine was imposed for the offence of selling the box with no separate penalties being levied in relation to the other two charges.
