The Metropolitan police south east Traffic unit on the 14th July successfully targeted uninsured, unregistered and untaxed vehicles in Lewisham & Greenwich.
Working in partnership with Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Officers from Catford Traffic Garage aimed to stop 50 Uninsured, unregistered and untaxed vehicles using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) computer.
An ANPR unit consists of a van containing the computer technology and camera equipment that, when it reads the vehicle registration mark (VRM) converts the image into data that is then compared against various databases such as the Police National Computer. If a match (hit) occurs then police officers can take appropriate action.
With checkpoints at Kender Street, New Cross, SE14 and Carlysle Road, Thamesmead, SE28, vehicles were selected for checks at the roadside by generating a hit on the ANPR system.
The initiative, which commenced at 10.00 this morning culminated in 51 Vehicles in total being stopped at both locations.
Officers issued offenders with a £200 Fixed penalty Notice and during the initiative seized 50 uninsured vehicles, which were taken to secure storage. Upon production of valid insurance, tax and other documents the vehicles will be restored to their owners.
Insp Barry Crundwell of the SE Traffic unit said “We continue to focus on uninsured drivers to disrupt criminals using the roads of London. Driving without insurance, is dangerous and a criminal offence, todays initiative has successfully demonstrated that anyone driving without valid documents will be detected and prosecuted”
