HOUSE SOLD FOR TIGERS

Comment on this story

A passion for Tigers led Phillip Davis, a former Coldstream Guard, to sell his house and use the 70% equity to found a voluntary organisation to help protect and conserve the tigers of India and Bengal. Phil, who served in Cyprus and was on active duty in Northern Ireland, has been passionate about tigers for over 20 years. Phillip’s organisation, which has applied for charitable status, was given help on 10th July, when Spice Master Restaurant in Belvedere, Kent, hosted a Charity Cabaret Evening on its 2nd Anniversary with a brand new ‘Legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll Show performed by the multi-talented Paul Cantara in tributes to Bill Haley, Elvis, The Big Bopper, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Tiger Awareness works in the Sundarbans to help people who live in the area, such as helping to build a hospital, supplying medical equipment, providing clean water supplies from newly-dug wells, education and bio-diversible fuels; and for the mangrove guards a boat in which to patrol for poachers, a Tato Sumo 4x4 Indian off-road vehicle, sleeping bags and binoculars. Tiger Awareness gives free talks about its conservation work to schools, the public, and organisations both large and small, in conjunction with Mukesh Sharma, who has worked tirelessly for tiger conservation, and who provides extensive information on his website www.saveindiastigers.co.uk. If any readers would like to help save the endangered Royal Bengal Tigers, they can find out more about tiger conservation and contact Phillip Davis at www.tigerawareness.co.uk.

Olympic Medal Winner’s Visit

Comment on this story

St Catherine’s were lucky enough to have Olympic Medal Winner Alison Mowbray visit the school. Alison won a silver medal in Athens 2004. Alison took an assembly with Gifted and Talented students, and spoke about her achievements and the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. She then led a fitness session with 30 girls. This was a thoroughly enjoyable event and one that the girls really enjoyed. At the same time as Alison visited us St Catherine’s hosted a Sports Fair, to raise awareness with our students of the many sports clubs that are available to them in the local area. There were many clubs representing a variety of sports, including Martial Arts, Table Tennis, Rugby, Yachting, Gymnastics and many more. The yachting club even managed to bring their boat, which had to be dismantled to get it into our Sports Hall, before being reassembled again. This event will hopefully encourage our students to be more active outside of school.
