At their meeting on 26th July at Erith Leisure Centre, starting at 7.30pm, Erith Town Forum will be presenting a cheque for £100 to Matthew King, a BETHS student who is setting out to become the youngest person in the world to climb the Seven Summits and the youngest Briton ever to climb Mount Everest. His first conquest is to be Kilimanjaro, the biggest mountain in Africa.
Matthew is taking on this challenge in memory of his grandfather who died of cancer at the early age of 55, at a time when hospice and respite care were not available. Having seen how the work of Greenwich and Bexley Hospice helps those in a similar condition to his grandfather, Matthew decided that it would be very good to try to raise funds for the Hospice whilst striving to achieve his own ambition, so he is looking for sponsorship. The Forum’s funds, however, will go towards the cost of getting Matthew out to Africa, and he needs to receive more funding for this part of the project

London Council leaders are calling for urgent action to force Thames Water to reduce water leakages in the capital and improve its service to householders and businesses.
The Association of London Government wants the water regular OFWAT to impose stiff fines on Thames Water and has warned that the company’s repeated failure to reduce leakage rates has put the health and hygiene of Londoners at risk.
ALG spokesman Cllr Merrick Cockell said: “We now have a situation where the company is applying for a Drought Order at goodness knows what possible cost to local businesses or at what risk to the public health of residents if water rationing is imposed.
“Every day millions of litres of water are being wasted because of leaking water pipes and poor infrastructure. It is about time that OFWAT used its powers to impose tough fines on Thames Water and made sure that this money is invested in new leak reduction schemes over and above its existing capital programme. We need to make sure that services to residents and businesses are improved.
“Year after year Londoners have seen their water bills rise and Thames Water’s profits increase, yet this is the third year in a row that the company has failed to meet targets for reducing water leakages – this unacceptable situation just cannot be allowed to continue!”
