Trust Thamesmead’s second Summer Festival kicked off in style with up to 400 school children taking part in a colourful parade which travelled between Thamesmead town centre and the site of the festival at Birchmere Park. The kids were in their element, walking through the closed streets, singing and dancing in their costumes which were made out of recyclable household goods. They even did a lap of the festival site, which brought festival goers to a standstill.
It really was a day to remember, with between 15-20,000 people attending between 10am and 8pm.
It is a hard call as to who stole the show - both Chico and Simon Webbe knocked the crowds socks off with their performances and as for the meet and greets - the two of them took their time meeting fans backstage, which made various competition winners day.
Trust Thamesmead’s Summer Festival was Chico’s second outdoor concert and he compared it to what it must feel like performing at Wembley. Chico pulled three ladies up on stage for a rendition of the Time Warp and he wowed the crowd with his new (cover) single, D.I.S.C.O, which goes like this, ‘D.I.S.C.O, D.I.S.C.O, C.H.I.C.O down at the D.I.S.C.O...’. Four newspaper competition winners got to dance on stage with Chico during his number one hit single, It’s Chico Time – they were in their element and Chico made it possible for another of his fans to meet him backstage and join them all on stage and pulled yet another young lad up on stage to join in too. Then the Trust’s very own Vickey Carr got to wipe Chico down with a towel that Chico had signed and threw it into the crowd.
Simon Webbe was in his element, singing, amongst other songs, his top ten solo hit singles and a cover of Blue’s hit, Too Close. He was joined on stage at one point by new rap group, UK Team - together they rocked!!!
The T Factor stage pulled in the crowds, as did the bandstand stage. Gallions sponsored beach theme area proved very popular with the under 5’s, especially on a hot and sweaty day like Saturday and the teens were in their element on the simulator ride, at the fun fair and sampling the free climbing wall.
The police had a stall and were recruiting for PCSOs, lots of people entered London City Airport’s competition to win a weekend break for two to Edinburgh and lots of youths signed up for Thamesmead’s first ever Youth Summit that is taking place on 11 August (I have more information regarding the Youth Summit, Trust Thamesmead’s Youth Forum are putting together, if you would like it).
