Six families from Hazel Housing Co-operative at Larkswood Close, near Hazel Road, Erith had a lucky escape when a lightning bolt ripped through their houses in the afternoon of Tuesday 4 July 2006 The lightening bolt hit the roofs of the properties creating a large hole, affected the electrics and caused serious fires in 3 of the properties. Six fire Engines with around 30 firefighter were called to battle the blazes of the row of 6 terraces. One person was taken to hospital suffering from shock. Firefighter from Erith Fire station and the surrounding areas eventually controlled the blaze by the evening All the houses suffered major structural damage with ceilings and roofs collapsing. The fires caused extensive damage to the upper floors of 3 houses. Residents were put up in a nearby hotel for the night, but are unable to salvage any of their property until structural engineers had inspected the damage and made the properties safe. The damage and cost of repair is being assessed by loss adjusters acting for the insurers of the property. The damage is so severe that it is likely to be some months before they can be repaired and made habitable again. In the meantime temporary accommodation for the families is being organised by Bexley Council. Residents on the estate, which is owned by the CDS housing co-operative, have already held a collection for the families.
