Floods hits North Bexley again
Many roads in Belvedere have suffered from flooding as a result of the torrential. Among the roads affected were Station Road and Picardy Street , where the water flooded over the central reservation in the road. Mitchell Close and Lower Road were also affected, causing some disruption to parents collecting their children from Belvedere Infant and Junior Schools . Belvedere Ward Councillor John Fuller, who has been on the scene speaking to local residents, commented:

“The shear volume of water going through the drains in Belvedere seems to have caused a pumping station to fail and as a result water has flooded onto the roads and created a hole in the ground, which has now been temporarily covered. Council Officers got to the scene very quickly to manage the situation and minimise the damage until Thames Water arrived.”

“Although there has been a lot of water discharged and Thames Water has now cleared it up, we will not know whether any properties have been damaged until local residents return from work and check their homes. If there is any damage they will need to contact Thames Water and my colleagues Councillors Bernard Clewes MBE (Erith Ward), David Leaf (Belvedere Ward) I are also happy to follow these cases up.”

“My colleagues and I are in regular contact with Thames Water to ensure that flooding is taken very seriously and I would like to thank Council Officers for getting to the scene so quickly to deal with the situation until Thames Water arrived.”

AWARD WINNING PLANS
Christ Church CE Primary School in Erith has received an accreditation award for developing a school travel plan, which aims to bring about a change in the way families travel to and from school.

Christ Church is one of two Bexley schools to have been accredited and is the first school in Bexley to receive its award and certificate.

The school has an impressive record: over the past year the school has cut four out of every 10 car journeys to and from school and walking to school has risen by 21%. Cycling to school has increased from two pupils cycling in 2006, to 29 in 2007 - the equivalent of a whole class of children using their bikes!

The Government wants all schools in London to have an approved travel plan in place by 2009. So far 42 Bexley schools have travel plans in place, 38 of which have been approved.

The accreditation scheme has been developed by Transport for London to encourage schools to develop plans and to recognise the work that schools have put into their plans.
