ASBO Secured Against Erith Youth
Bexley Council has secured an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) against a youth involved in gang-related activities and violent attacks on a number of people in the Bexley area.
Daniel Garton, aged 16, from Erith was involved in anti social behaviour around the borough’s town centres. He was identified by the Police as a ringleader of a group of individuals who had been causing disorder and alarm in the borough.
Garton’s activities included attacking passers-by, hanging around Bexleyheath Broadway in a large group and intimidating traders, security staff and visitors and causing criminal damage on local buses.
Garton was issued with an interim ASBO in December 2006 following an application made by Bexley Council’s legal team as his behaviour was causing significant concern to the Police and public. On 25 January 2007, having seen the weight of evidence, Magistrates were satisfied that an ASBO was necessary and issued the Order.
Councillor Katie Perrior, the Council’s Cabinet member for Community Affairs, said: “Tackling anti social behaviour is one of our key priorities. This ASBO shows the close co-operation between the Council and Police to deal effectively with prolific offenders and that we won’t put up with their behaviour in our borough.
“This action runs alongside our support of the use of dispersal powers to tackle these types of problems. I have also been pleased to see the use of high visibility jackets by many of our local stakeholders and the introduction of the Street Pastor scheme, which help to bring extra resources into the town centre at key times as part of our disorder action plan.”
Superintendent Martin Bagg, the Police lead on the disorder action plan with the Council, said: “This youth was identified as a ringleader and we worked closely with the Council to secure this ASBO. He needs firm boundaries and the ASBO prohibitions will ensure that, if he steps over these, Police can act to protect local people.
“This work is part of our action plan to break up large groups of individuals who are causing the majority of disorder and fuelling gang-related activities. Working with our partners, we have made significant progress to address some of the problems and I am committed to providing Police resources to stamp out this type of activity in the borough in the future.”

MP URGES PARENTS TO USE THEIR CHILD TRUST FUND
Parents in Bexley and Greenwich are being urged to use their Child Trust Fund vouchers to ensure their children have savings behind them when they reach 18.
John Austin, Labour MP for Erith & Thamesmead, was speaking during the first-ever Child Trust Fund Week, which ran from January 15th to 20th.
He is calling on parents in Erith & Thamesmead to use their £250 vouchers to open an account and ask friends and family to get engaged with their child’s account to build a nest egg for the child’s future.
New figures published this month show that in Erith & Thamesmead constituency, 6,871 Child Trust Fund vouchers have been issued to parents. 4,792 savings accounts have already been opened by parents themselves. The remaining 2,079 are still to be opened or will be automatically opened by HM Revenue & Customs if the vouchers are not used after 12 months so that no child loses out.
John Austin, Labour MP for Erith & Thamesmead, said:
“The Child Trust Fund is a great way of saving for a child’s future. All parents with children born since September 2002 will have received a £250 voucher to get an account started. The Government will add an extra £250 for families on lower incomes, and there will be further top-ups when children reach the age of 7.
“I’m pleased that nearly 5,000 parents in my constituency have already opened an account for their child, but I want to encourage all eligible parents to open an account and get friends, family, grandparents and the whole family involved.
“To help raise awareness of the Child Trust Fund it would be helpful if the local media could publicise the accounts and encourage grand –parents, relatives and friends to top them up at birthday and Christmas time, making a sound investment for the child’s future.”
