Quality of Life, has Bin ruined
The Residents of Becton Place, North Heath are not too keen on their Landlords latest, quality of life, downer. `Peoples Position`(a group of Residents that really care about their quality of life) claims Orbit Bexley decided to move the rubbish bins from a perfectly good and safe location to a spot where the residents come too and fro to their front doors.

They also state there was no cosmetics considered nor health and safety, just dump them and let nature do the rest i.e. festering rubbish that wafts smells around peoples flats which prevents them from opening their windows. Rats, foxes and other vermin have been seen ripping open the refuse bags and there is a real danger of fire.

A spokesman from the `Peoples Position`(a group of Residents that really care about their quality of life) said “we have sent many complaints to Orbit Bexley with negative results and with no seemingly thought for the comfort or welfare of their Residents. But you can rest assured that we will keep paying our rents and service charges”.

Jillie Smithies, Director of Operations for Orbit Bexley Housing Association says: “Within the block at Becton Place a rubbish-chute system for general household rubbish leads to a bin compound where it is collected. Due to rubbish entering the bins from the chute above, the compound is a restricted area for health and safety reasons. It is therefore only Estate Wardens wearing the required safety wear (hard hats) that are permitted enter the bin compound.

However, residents have entered the compound to leave larger household items, which the chute is unable to take. The health and safety of our residents is a priority, and to prevent any possible accidents two bins were moved outside so residents could dispose of larger household items safely.

Environmental Health is happy with the position of the bins and has written to all residents informing them of this. An officer from Orbit Bexley Housing Association met with the leader of the Peoples Position group to explain the Association’s decision. The chair of the Residents’ Association has also been informed of the decision and is happy with the arrangements.

The bins are emptied on a regular basis; however Orbit Bexley Housing Association will monitor the situation to ensure sufficient bins are provided for the disposal of large house hold items that will not fit in the chutes.”

BEST EVER RESULTS PUT BEXLEY SCHOOLS ON THE MAP
Bexley achieved its best ever GCSE results in 2006 according to new figures published. 64.2% of pupils in the borough achieved five good GCSE passes, up by 6.7% points on last year and a staggering 15.6% points increase since 2001.

Bexley Grammar School is the top performing school in the borough. Results at the school have risen 3 percentage points, from 97% to 100% in three years, including English and Maths.

The Achievement and Attainment tables show that London state school pupils lead the rest of the country for the third year running with 58.3% of pupils getting five good GCSE passes compared to 57.5% nationally. They also perform better than the national average when the five or more A*- C grades include English and maths - 45.8% compared to 44.1% nationally.

To celebrate this achievement, Transport for London (TfL) has produced a special tube map for only the third time in its history. It has replaced the stations with some of the capital’s successful schools, inspirational teachers, excellent GCSE students and successful Londoners who went to state schools, including Rio Ferdinand, Sir Michael Caine, Emma Thompson and Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.

The map – called ‘Your Tube’ – was unveiled by Andrew Adonis on Thursday at a celebratory event in North London attended by some of the students and teachers featured on it, as part of the ‘London’s Schools Celebrating Achievement’ campaign.

Star student Katie-Anne Gresley from St Catherine’s RC School for Girls was at the event. She achieved fantastic GCSE results in 2006 and was rewarded with a place on the map alongside their school.

Other successful schools featured on the map from Bexley include Blackfen School, St Mary and St Joseph’s Catholic School, Beths Grammar School, Townley Grammar School, Hurtsmere Foundation School, Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School and Trinity School.
