Howbury Young People Celebrate
Young people at the Howbury Youth Centre were cheering their success last month, at a special award evening to celebrate recent achievements.
Twelve young people from the youth centre received a range of awards.
“This was a great event. It’s uplifting to see our young people working hard for something they can be proud of,” says Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle, who was on hand to congratulate the young people and hand out certificates.
“Our youth service gives young people the chance to get involved in their community and make a difference. I would encourage young people to find out about their local centre and see what they have on offer.”
Senior youth centre member, Kayleigh Woodcock, picked up the coveted Jack Petchey Achievement Certificate for her involvement in a successful funding bid for a trampoline for the centre.
As part of the award, Kayleigh was presented with a cheque for £600. Kayleigh will be sharing her success - using the money to take all of the Howbury senior group ice-skating.
During the event six junior members were given certificates for completing an adventure challenge. The adventure challenge is designed for young members as a taster for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
The adventure challenge completed by the Howbury members was based on community work.
Five junior members received certificates for their involvement and development since joining the centre.
This is the second presentation night that Howbury Youth Centre has organised and they hope to be hosting many more in the future.
Howbury Youth Centre runs two groups, a junior group for 10-12 year olds and a senior group for 13-19 year olds.
The junior sessions are every weekday during term time from 3.15-5.45pm. Senior sessions are every Wednesday and Thursday from 6.30-9pm.
Youth Centre members take part in a range of activities including community work, games, outings. Junior members can work towards their adventure challenge certificates while older members can start on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Anyone interested in joining the Youth Centre should just turn up to find out more.

Woodside School in Halt Robin Road, won the title after a thrilling local final involving another team from Woodside and a team from Marlborough School, Sidcup, at the Boathouse, Danson Park.

Boost For Disabled Swimmers
Disabled swimmers in Bexley will find enjoying their sport a little easier during their next visit to Crook Log Leisure Centre in Bexleyheath.
Provision for customers with a range of disabilities has been improved at the Centre, with the arrival of specialist equipment for the changing room.
This consists of a portable shower trolley and an electric mobile hoist both of which are specially designed to help people with severe physical difficulties when getting ready to use the Centre’s swimming facilities.
The equipment was purchased by a grant application made to a previous Bexley Mayor’s Fund by Arthritis Care, a local organisation serving the needs of people with mobility problems.
Training has been given not only to the Leisure Centre staff on how the equipment should be used but also to representatives of local disability groups in Bexley. Members from local sports groups, such as Bexley Beavers Swimming Club, who regularly use the pool, are now benefiting from the additional changing facilities.
Ian King, Area Manager for Parkwood Leisure, who manage Crook Log Leisure Centre on behalf of Bexley Council, commented: “We welcome the introduction of this equipment, which can only improve our service to this section of the community.”
