‘STAND UP, SPEAK UP’

Young people from Bexley will take to the red carpet later this month, when they premiere their film production, ‘Stand up, speak up’.

Cineworld in Bexleyheath has given up one of its Sunday screens for a special showing of the 17 minute film on Sunday 18th December.

The film has a completely modern professional feel, look and sound. The young people involved were even able to get permission from rock band Kaiser Chiefs, to use their recent hit ‘I predict a riot’ as part of the film’s soundtrack.

‘Stand up, speak up’ was inspired by discussions with young people from across the borough, during Bexley’s Youth Summit earlier this year. It has been written, directed and performed by the young people, aged 16 –19. Almost everyone involved in the project attends one of Bexley’s Youth Centres.

The film will form part of an important resources pack about bullying and racism which the group are putting together – the first of it’s kind produced entirely by young people. Bexley Youth Service hope to distribute the free pack to every school in Bexley. If successful, the team hopes to widen the distribution to schools across London.

The film was made entirely at Charlton Athletic’s FC’s training ground, and is based around a fictional mixed football academy. During the film the main characters deal with challenging situations, and have to make some difficult emotional decisions.

One of the film’s stars, 17-year-old Nicole Porter says: “It’s important that young people are made aware of just how horrible racism and bullying can be. We hope that this dramatisation gives young people a chance to think about their actions.”

Shall we Salsa?

Salsa Mundo Latino is different from a lot of the salsa clubs within the UK because we teach authentic Cuban salsa and Latin dance. Of course salsa was actually born and bread in Cuba, but as it’s hit other continents people have made up their own styles and names, for example, NY, Cross body, Jive, and this is what is mostly taught here.

The Cuban salsa has more freestyle to it, which means you use more of the floor space, and you don’t have to integrate too many of those turns or made up routines. This makes it ideal for any age, young or old. Within his classes José aims to teach people on a one to one basis, as well as in a group, and to teach people ‘how to dance’ rather than concentrate on glamorous routines. Routines are taught but in a different way from many of the clubs here in the UK due to the style of Cuban dance. Salsa Mundo Latino are not in competition with other clubs within the area, we actually encourage our members to try other clubs so they can see how the style of dancing does differ from ours, thus giving them a bigger range and view of Salsa dancing. We believe its down to the individual which type of Salsa and club they wish to learn from, as we all do things slightly different, and teach different styles from others and they may prefer one type of Salsa more than another.

You can’t get more Cuban than José because he was actually born in Cuba and has danced for most of his life. José is a professional dancer, and trained at many dance schools in Cuba eventually graduating from the Havana school of dance in 1995. He then went on to perform in the Nocturno Cabaret and Tropicana night club in Havana. José also formed his own popular dance group which performed all over Cuba, as well as choreographing for other night clubs in Cuba, He also taught children and adults of all ages in local dance schools. From there he performed in many hotels on the Guardalavaca coast, including the Paradisus Rio De Oro, where he met his wife and eventually came to England.

Salsa Mundo Latino was set up in September 2004, and the classes have gone from strength to strength since then. We started with one class, and to this date we now have three classes a week with a new class opening in November. We don’t charge a membership fee, and we use a pay as you go system, so if you can’t come one week you don’t lose your money!

We also hold party nights, where all our members can come and have a fun night dancing salsa and Latin dance; we even include a fun competition where anyone can enter and be judged by an independent judge and maybe win a small trophy! We also have our own website, www.salsamundolatino.co.uk where we have information about our classes, news, club nights , which our members can keep up to date with.

Our classes run from Monday to Wednesday in Bexleyheath and Erith, with the new class scheduled for November.
