two-tier parking penalty
Bexley’s motorists will face a two-tier parking penalty system from this month. The new rules will provide a system of charges, depending on the type of offence and where it takes place.

The actual penalty charge issued will depend on the category of contravention, which has been split into “More Serious” and “Less Serious”. The “More Serious” contraventions, such as parking on yellow lines, on the pavement, on bus stops, on zig zag markings etc, will be issued at a higher charge than the “Less Serious”, such as over-staying on time purchased at a meter or parking outside of a marked bay.

London Councils and TfL carried out the consultation exercise last year with the public, motoring organisations, the police, disabled drivers associations and other interested parties to identify whether or not the current system of charges for parking penalties could be made fairer. London is the first city in the country to introduce a two-tier parking penalty system. More information and a complete listing of the new classifications can be found on www.londoncouncils.gov.uk

In the Borough of Bexley it will mean that in Bexleyheath town centre “More Serious” contraventions will attract a charge of £120, while “Less Serious” ones will cost £80. Elsewhere in Bexley (and in Council pay and display car parks) the charges will be £100 & £60 respectively. All penalties will be reduced by 50 per cent if paid within 14 days of the date of issue of the Notice.

RAID FINDS 2 HANDGUNS
Two men have been sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court for robbery, serious assault and possession of firearms.

The charges all relate to an incident in Peckham on 28th September 2006

The first man, Olatunj Olaleye aged twenty, of Osborne Square, Dagenham, was sentenced to nine years for assault with intent to rob, seven years for GBH, six years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, all to run concurrently.

The second, Kirk Douglas aged eighteen, of Browning St, SE17, sentenced to:

nine years for assault with intent to rob. seven years fo GBH, six years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, all to run concurrently.

They first appeared at the Inner London Crown Court on 27th February 2007 charged with assault, robbery and firearm offences, following an investigation by Operation Trident. Olaleye and Douglas appeared for trial at the Inner London Crown Court on 17th April 2007, charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, GBH and assault with intent to rob and robbery. They were both convicted on 25th April.

The incident leading to their convictions occurred on Thursday 28th September 2006, around 8.50 pm. Police were called to reports of gunshots being fired inside Heaton House, Heaton Rd, Peckham, SE15.

The victim, aged 22, was taken by friends to a south London hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Olatunji Olaleye was arrested and charged on 06th October 2006.

On 20 October 2006 officers executed a search warrant at a flat in Miles Close, Thamesmead, SE28. Two handguns, ammunition and a quantity of a substance believed to be heroin were recovered. Kirk Douglas was arrested at the address in connection with the incident.

Two other men were arrested at the address at the same time as a result of the firearms, ammunition and drugs being found. They pleaded guilty at a separate trial and a date for sentencing will be arranged.

DI Gordon Allison, of the Specialist Crime Directorate, said today: “The conviction of these offenders and the removal of firearms from the streets of London is another example of Trident striving to protect the citizens of London.”
