Festival School Parade
Trust Thamesmead have commissioned Taru (Transforming Arts, Regenerating Understanding) to manage London’s biggest recycling carnival project.
Trust Thamesmead and Taru are working together with six Thamesmead primary schools – Bishop John Robinson, Hawksmoor, Linton Mead, St John Fisher, St Margaret Clitherow and Windrush and one after school club – Hawksmoor, which involves more than 400 year five and six (10 and 11 year old) primary school pupils, to make instruments and costumes out of recycled materials for the Trust Thamesmead Summer Festival School Parade, for the third year running.
Each school has been given the task of collecting a type of recycled good - St Margaret Clitherow primary school, who we caught up with earlier this week to find out how they are progressing, were in charge of metal.
“This is the third year I have personally been involved in the Trust Thamesmead Summer Festival School parade recycling project,” said Katie Isaacs, Year six teacher/Assistant Head at St Margaret Clitherow. “It is a fantastic opportunity to teach children about the importance of recycling and the children thoroughly enjoy taking part.”
The parade is being based on Thamesmead’s 40th birthday this year and involves the schools working on their own ‘section’, including a boat and fishes to represent Thamesmead’s canals, a float featuring a clock tower which represents the clock tower in Thamesmead Town Centre and bricks and tools to represent Thamesmead’s extensive building programme.
“It has been great fun making costumes and playing on the instruments – I like letting out my frustrations on the drums,” said Mark Wiley.
“I am going to be nervous but I will stay strong and have fun,” said Udoka Ezeaka, “All my friends and family will be watching.”
Meanwhile, ten year old Antoinette Lansana, who was helping to paint the monster fish’s head said she was most looking forward to “making lots of noise of course.”
Watch or take part in this year’s Trust Thamesmead Summer Festival School Parade from 12 noon on Saturday 14 July at Linton Mead Primary School in Central Way, Thamesmead and carnival your way in style, along Bentham Road and into Birchmere Park, to be greeted by a crowd of thousands before entertainment kicks off on the main stage at 1:00pm, partying through to 8:00pm.
