HORSA ROAD STREET BRIEFING
Over 30 residents turned out to a street briefing held by the North Heath Safer Neighbourhoods Policing team last month.
The evening briefing was held on Tuesday 15th May in Horsa Road at the junction with Etherlbert Road.
Safer Neighbourhoods Policing Teams hold street briefings to give local communities the opportunity to meet their police team and hear about what they are doing in the neighbourhood to tackle crime and disorder. It also enables the public to tell the police team what concerns them in their neighbourhood.
The main issues raised by the residents were fly tipping and anti-social behaviour in the alleyways at the rear of Horsa Road. Residents discussed the possibility of introducing an alleygate scheme to prevent youths using the alleys anti-socially. In the meantime, officers will carry out regular patrols at key times.
Police Community Support Officer, Faizur Rahman, gave a brief talk on how the team are tackling anti-social behaviour. The new Northumberland Heath dispersal zone gives the police powers to disperse groups of youths, the officers regularly carry out high visibility patrols where youths congregate, such as open spaces, alleyways and stairwells in blocks of flats. The team also visit the local youth clubs on a regular basis as well as St Fidelis, Belmont and North Heath Primary Schools and Erith Secondary School which has its own Safer Schools Officer. All these measures are having a deterrent effect.
Alcohol related anti-social behaviour is also being tackled by regular visits to off licences and public houses, and alcohol will continue to be confiscated from anyone underage found in possession of it.
Back in February the policing team worked with the London Probation Service to bring the Community Payback Scheme to Horsa Road as part of a ‘Beat Sweep’ initiative’. During the week long operation the alleyways were cleared of rubbish, debris, discarded furniture and overgrown foliage was cut back.
Sergeant Perry Wright said, “Listening to our communities is probably the most important aspect of what we do. The feedback that we get from our communities helps us to review, develop and improve the service we give.
It is good to see that there is such a strong sense of community in the neighbourhood. The residents seem very happy about the noticeable increase in uniformed patrols and having someone they can talk to about local issues. A number of residents also indicated that they would be willing to support a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme”.
Argos comes to Erith Riverside
The latest retailer to join the array of household names at Erith Riverside Shopping Centre is Argos; famous for choice, value and convenience. The £3.8 billion turnover company is due to open their doors to the public on 24th August 2007 offering the community thousands of products under one roof at fantastic prices.
Eric Roseman, Director of Asset Management at owners Frogmore said “We’re very excited to be welcoming Argos to Erith Riverside. Together with the council, we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring new retailers to Erith and we anticipate that this will be the first of many new stores at the Centre.”
The new store will be located adjacent to the bus stops on Pier Road and will create in excess of 30 jobs for the area, and the newly employed staff will be more than happy to welcome you when you visit.
PASSING OUT PARADE
Officers from the Longlands Safer Neighbourhoods Policing Team attended a passing out parade at Erith Fire Station, Belvedere on Friday 27th April 2007.
The policing team were invited along to find out more about the LIFE (local intervention and fire education) Project which is aimed at reducing the effects of anti-social behaviour in our communities.
Fire Brigade Borough Commander, David Whiting, presented the thirteen young people who attended the LIFE course between 23rd and 27th April, with a photo of their class and a portfolio of all the different life skills they achieved.
