NEW MAYOR
Councillor Nigel Betts, a truly local man who represents the Falconwood and Welling Ward, has become Bexley’s 44th Mayor at the Council’s annual meeting on Wednesday 16 May. His wife and the new Mayoress is Mrs Hilary Betts.
To say that Councillor Betts is a local is an understatement. He has never lived more than a road or an avenue away from Hook Lane, Welling, since the day he was born in September 1948. Growing up in The Green, Welling, during the 1950s was a magical time. Cllr Betts says: “The Green seemed like the centre of the universe to me. We were isolated by the railway on one side and the A2 on the other and everything seemed to happen there.” His greatest memory of his childhood was the milkman, Eric, who used to drive his horse and cart along by the current site of the Falconwood Community Centre, which was to play such a major role in his later life.
Councillor Betts says: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve the community that is the whole of our Borough. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as the Deputy Mayor from 1999 to 2000 with the Mayor, Councillor Linda Bailey and I hoped that one day I would become Mayor. I know how much hard work it involves, but my Mayoress and I are ready for the challenge.”
Married in 1980, Councillor and Mrs Betts have four children - Robert (41), Shaun (37), Tim (25) and Kathryn (24).
For their charity appeal this year, the Mayor and Mayoress have chosen to work with Bexley Crossroads, to launch the ‘Stepping Out Appeal’ to help young people with caring responsibilities.
The appeal will:
- Enable the charity to identify children and young people who live daily with caring responsibilities
- Provide support unique to each child or young person, enabling them to step out of their caring role and have time out to be themselves.
The new Mayor and Mayoress will be supported this year by the new Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nick O’Hare and the new Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Maria O’Hare.
