Young People’s Sports Awards 2007
Two hundred local youngsters were paid tribute to during this year’s Young People’s Sports Awards held at Erith Leisure Centre on Saturday 3 February.

Some 600 people attended the event, including parents, families and teachers of those receiving awards.

Presentations were made in recognition of Bexley’s performance at the London Youth Games in July 2006, Community Sports Volunteers, Focus Sport Awards (working in partnership with Bexley’s local sports clubs), Sports Endeavour Awards and National Honours for Bexley’s top achievers already competing for the UK.

Sporting Champion, Julie Fletcher, former football player for the women’s England and Arsenal football teams, was a guest speaker at the event and presented some of the awards. Also incorporated into this year’s ceremony were awards from the School Sports Partnership, which were given to school sport volunteers, top achieving school sports teams and for contributions to out-of-school-hour sport.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Tourism, Cllr Peter Catterall, who attended the ceremony said: “Everyone who received recognition at the Young People’s Sports Awards 2007 should feel justifiably proud of their achievement. Bexley is proud of its sporting talent and the way sport is being promoted and developed locally so that we can find our sporting stars of the future.”

Other Bexley Council representatives attending the event included the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress (Cllr Colin Tandy and his wife Valerie), Council Leader Cllr Ian Clement and Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle.
