Belvedere Controlled Parking Zone Axed
Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor Peter Craske, announced at February 2007 full Council meeting that plans by his Labour predecessor, Cllr Daniel Francis, and Transport for London to charge residents in Belvedere to park had been axed. Following a consultation with local residents and input from Belvedere Councillors David Leaf and John Fuller, it was clear that a CPZ was not needed. Cllr Craske said:
“I am grateful to all of the residents in Belvedere who took the time to fill in the consultation, the vast majority of whom opposed it. The previous Labour Administration had already allocated money towards this project when I took office. But following concerns raised by Ward Councillors David Leaf and John Fuller, some of the questions on the original consultation document were changed to encourage residents to let us know what their parking and traffic-related problems were rather than the Council telling them. As a result, residents have sent us a number of useful suggestions that we have taken note of and will look into.”
Ward Councillor David Leaf remarked:
“I am very pleased that the decision has been made to scrap the CPZ plans. It was not needed and local residents did not want it. It would have been nothing more than an inconvenient stealth tax.”
“The CPZ was a thoughtless policy and it is very disappointing that Cllr Francis wanted to impose this stealth tax on residents in his own ward and kept that fact hidden. Given Labour’s track record of ignoring the views of local residents, it was quite understandable why residents were concerned that they would be subjected to the CPZ regardless of their opinions.”
Belvedere’s other Conservative Ward Councillor John Fuller added:
“It’s good news that the present Conservative Administration are listening to the residents in Belvedere, especially when the original scheme was going to be imposed on them by the only Labour councillor who is left in Belvedere.”
BEWARE BOGUS CALLERS
Residents are being warned about bogus callers who are claiming to be police officers offering to carry out security checks.
Three burglaries have occurred between 6th and 7th March 2007 where the suspects called on elderly residents in the borough. Two men have entered the properties and stole cash and jewellery after offering free security checks and advice on making the homes secure.
The men showed an identification badge and were wearing plain clothes - not in police uniform.
Bexley Police are reminding the public all police officers carry official identity cards with their photograph, name and warrant number.
If you are in any doubt about someone who claims to be from the police and you are not expecting the police to call, for any reason, keep the chain on, check the photo in their identity card, ask for their name and number and if you have the slightest doubt about their identity please do not hesitate in calling Bexley Police immediately on 0208 301 1212 to check they are genuine. In an emergency always call 999.
If a stranger calls at your house, DO NOT open the door unless they have made an appointment and have clear identification. If you are elderly or vulnerable ONLY allow callers in to your home, when they have an appointment and only when a friend or family member is with you.
Remember the simple message - “If in doubt - keep them out!”
