Eight Illegal Immigrants Found in Chemical Tanker
At approximately 0800 on 8th February 2008 police were called after the driver of a tanker stopped to check his load in Harrow Manor Way, SE2. It is understood he was transporting a carbon-based powder substance, now thought to be an industrial cleaning chemical.

The tanker is thought to have started its journey in Cologne, Germany.

Eight people were found in the rear of the tanker, suffering from the effects of gas or vapors emitted from the load. They were taken to various London hospitals and received treatment for breathing difficulties (believed to be caused by inhalation of fumes).

A 30 year old woman, five adult males, a 12 year old boy and a 16 year old boy were all treated at hospital, released with no serious effects and later arrested for suspected immigration offences: They were taken to a South London police station and dealt with by the Border and Immigration Agency.

The male driver, aged 55, was arrested on suspicion of people trafficking and also taken to a South London police station. He was later bailed to return on 26th March 2008 pending further enquiries.

Local Conservative Councillor David Leaf has called for the Government to take action to ensure that there is no repeat, he states

“The fact that eight illegal immigrants were seemingly able to enter the country in this way is deeply worrying. There has been a massive lapse in border security that must be rectified. We need to know the full facts behind the case and the Government must learn the lessons.”

“There are likely to be countless other incidents where illegal immigrants have come into the country, and Bexley and Greenwich, in this way, some of whom could be dangerous people who could make our streets unsafe. Local residents are very worried that our borders are not secure and we do not know who is coming into this country.”
