A tip off catches flytipper
A fly tipper has been fined for dumping rubbish in Belvedere thanks to the vigilence of a member of the public and the London Borough of Bexley’s Enviro Crime team.
Raghbir Bansal pleaded guilty to fly tipping under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on 4 February. Mr Bansal was fined £150 and was ordered to pay the London Borough of Bexley compensation and its costs.
“The London Borough of Bexley treats this sort of offence very seriously, and the diligent actions taken by our officers in this case should serve as a warning for others who may be tempted to dump their waste illegally;” says the Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Gareth Bacon.
“The Council has provided a multitude of legitimate means for residents and businesses to dispose of their waste and we will not tolerate fly tipping under any circumstances.”
A member of the public reported a man unloading several sacks of rubbish and a computer monitor from a vehicle in Parkside Road, Belvedere on 30 September 2007.
An Enviro Crime Officer visited the site and retrieved a bag containing correspondence. The vehicle was traced to Mr Raghbir Bansal of 82 Rochester Drive, Bexley. The correspondence provided valuable evidence linking the fly tipping to an address registered to the offender’s wife.
Mr Bansal attended the Council’s offices last October, where he was interviewed under caution and admitted the offence.

Bexley’s drink drive figures are up by 10%
Figures obtained by the London Assembly Liberal Democrats show that the number of people arrested for drink-driving in Bexley has increased by almost 10% from 2004-2007.
This is compared to London-wide figures where charges for positive breath tests have actually decreased by almost 10% in the same period.Dee Doocey, Policing Spokesperson for the London Assembly Liberal Democrats, said: “Bexley is one of just six boroughs where drink-driving has increased in the past three years. “I cannot believe in this day and age that people still think it is acceptable to drink and drive. I urge the authorities to target this issue and soon. We need to see more drink awareness projects and sensible drinking campaigns to tackle this worrying trend.”“London as a whole is improving on its drink-driving record, while Bexley continues to get worse. Bexley needs to get tough on drink-driving now.”
