A dedicated telephone number is now available for those who prefer to text information to the Bexley Community Safety Partnership about non-urgent crime and disorder problems in the borough.
The service has been introduced after a number of residents on the Thamesmead Community Safety Action Zone’s (CSAZ) Residents’ Panel mentioned that people using mobile telephones to call the Partnership’s freephone 0800 389 5013 number were charged for the call. The residents felt that this could deter mobile phone users from reporting non-urgent crime and disorder issues.
Research by the CSAZ team found that some people only have a mobile telephone and others prefer to use a mobile rather than a landline.
The new number to call is 07968 341403. If you text or leave a message, please leave a number where you can be contacted, so that someone can get back to you for more information.

An innovative scheme for students at the Howbury Pupil Referral Unit has been caught on camera for the freeview digital channel, Teachers’ TV.
The PRU were chosen to feature in the 15-minute documentary, ‘Inspirations’, for their partnership work with Youth Esteem UK’s Valued Youth Tutoring Scheme. The scheme aims to boost the confidence and self-esteem of secondary age children, especially those who have been disaffected and those needing alternative motivation to achieve.
The documentary followed two PRU students on the scheme, who worked in Slade Green Infant School and Days Lane Primary School for at least one day per week, supporting the literacy and numeracy of infants. Interviews with the students, their parents and teachers make up the documentary which illustrates how successful Valued Youth has been at Howbury.
Headteacher Jenny Spittles is proud to have been involved in the programme: “It is fantastic that the success of the scheme at Howbury has been highlighted in this way. I hope that other schools will be able to see how beneficial it is and that it will allay any fears they may have about taking part. We can testify to the profound, positive effect taking part has on the students’ personal development.”
National Development Manager for Youth Esteem, Tracey Byrne, suggested Howbury’s involvement in the documentary as a prime example of the scheme’s success.
Tracey attended the PRU Achievement Day last summer, and presented the four pupils involved with their certificates, personal gifts and monetary prizes of cheques up to a maximum of £120, for completing this valuable work-related learning experience.

A police initiative, aimed at offering sport to young people as a route toward fitness and a healthy lifestyle, is about to expand this year and is looking for local businesses and organisations to support it.
Met-Track was piloted in Bexley, at Erith Leisure Centre in May 2005, led by Bexley Borough Police and Charlton Athletic’s Community Scheme.
It was judged by all involved to have been immensely successful and this year Greenwich borough will be joining Bexley and holding a corresponding event at Sutcliffe Park, Kidbrooke.
Met-Track offered coaching in athletics and football to Bexley youngsters who might not otherwise have had such an opportunity. The aim was to show them the fun and advantages of a healthy lifestyle.
Sixteen young people from secondary schools across Bexley were later recognised for their efforts at two separate events.
Five were presented with Met-Track awards by her Majesty the Queen, when she visited Bexleyheath Police Station last July.
The others appeared in front of 27,000 fans at The Valley, during Charlton’s Premiership match against Tottenham Hotspur.
Met-track will run with a three-day programme in Greenwich from May 22 to 24, and three more days in Bexley from May 24 to 26.
