Bookstart Bear says “Enjoy Sharing Books!”
Following the success of last year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Bexley Libraries will again be offering the mini version for children up to five years called the Bookstart Book Crawl. This was successfully introduced a few years ago and Bexley Library Service intends to continue building on that success.
Just by sharing five books your child will receive a full-colour certificate designed by a famous children’s illustrator. Future years will continue to see certificates designed by other acclaimed illustrators so children can build up a collection of certificates as keepsakes of their earliest years as library members.
Children need to be library members to take part in the Book Crawl which takes place in every library including the mobile between May 14th and June 24th 2007. It’s free and easy to join!
Many libraries in Bexley will be running a special event during the first week of Book Crawl which will be lots of fun and will consist of songs and rhymes – all absolutely free! What’s more - Bookstart Bear will be making a surprise appearance at some of these events! These events will be as well as the weekly Toddlertime sessions which are already run in every library. Just turn up and enjoy!
Libraries are full of sturdy board books and colourful picture books just perfect for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers and, to put your mind at rest, there’s no charge for accidental damage to books borrowed on an under fives library ticket.
Remember you’re never too young to share a book! Research has shown a strong link between sharing books and speech and language development.
Babies love books and babies love libraries! So why not toddle along to your local library?
To find out more ask at your local library or phone the Children, Young People & Community Learning Librarians Frances and Ruth on 020 8309 4138 . Or e-mail: libraries@bexley.gov.uk
