Young people at the new Southlake Youth Centre recently got the chance to try out the ancient Brazilian self-defence dance, Capoeira.
Ten young people aged 13 - 19 came along to the special classes run as part of the Black History events.
The group were given a brief history of Capoeira before being shown some basic moves by the London School of Capoeira’s Master Marcos.
Capoeira is a combination of gymnastics, dance and martial arts, and originated among African slaves in Brazil, in the 16th century, as a form of self defence. The slaves disguised Capoeira as a dance to escape their masters attention. To ensure their survival the moves were put to music and Capoeira’s deadly potential was hidden.
“It was a great morning. Everyone got into the spirit of the class and really enjoyed themselves,” says centre manager and Capoeira expert, Amrit Rahi. “This is just one of the many different activities we hope to be running here at Southlake in the future. The new facilities will make it possible to hold a really diverse range of events.”
Feedback from the event has been really positive. Fourteen year old Kieran Holloway says; “It was great fun. We learnt some moves and some of the history of Capoeira. I think next time the session should be even longer”
The centre is already home to a number of different projects, including basketball, internet access and a state of the art music studio. Club members aged 13 - 19 meet on Mondays Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 11 - 13 year olds meet on Tuesdays.
