Erith F1 Fan in Fast lane

F1 fan, James Reynolds, an IT analyst at Danske Bank, recently spent the quickest day of his life with F1 racing driver David Coulthard (“DC”). He was a lucky winner of a free prize draw to win a Castrol XV Heart Racing Drive Day single-seater driving experience at the world famous Silverstone circuit. James, who lives in Erith Kent, says, “The highlight of the day for me was going for a hot lap with David Coulthard in a Merc CLS. Anyone can say they’ve had a go at driving at Silverstone, but not many have been chauffeured around the track by an F1 Grand Prix winning driver.” During the day, James enjoyed an “extreme” ride around the circuit with the F1 ace at the wheel. Other highlights included single-seater racing, a tour of the Red Bull F1 Racing factory, and a personal audience with DC where winners were able to get the low down on life in the F1 fast lane. James won his prize at the Castrol XV Heart Racing Drive Days open day, held during September in the Broadgate Arena, Liverpool Street, in the City of London. The arena, which is an ice rink in winter, was transformed into London’s very own Monte Carlo for the day. Punters were able to experience the driving, and see the cars, the girls and the glamour in an experiential showcase of high performance motoring.

Lottery Funded Facilities

A project to upgrade sports facilities at five Bexley schools which began in 2002, is nearing completion, with four of the five sites now open for use. Almost £2 million for the project came from the Big Lottery Fund, through the ‘New Opportunities for PE and Sport’ (NOPES) programme, which supports the development of indoor and outdoor sports facilities at schools. Westwood College in Welling has a new multi-use games area and is opening up its sports hall to community use. The area is floodlit and suitable for netball, basketball, football and tennis. It offers greatly improved opportunities for the pupils, for example, for girls to play netball and football. Woodside School in Belvedere has a floodlit multi-use games area that has dramatically improved its sports facilities. Pupils are benefiting both in curriculum time, after-school and at playtimes. Head Teacher Linda Crooks says: “The pupils and staff are thrilled with the new facility. It has a great rubberised surface and the dividing wall is perfect for two groups to work simultaneously. We are looking forward to working with disability and community groups to ensure that everyone benefits from the new facility.” Trinity School in Belvedere has a fabulous three-quarter sized synthetic turf pitch. Again the facility is floodlit and suitable for hockey, football, tennis and netball. Trinity School also hosts one of Bexley’s school sports partnerships and is leading the way in developing high quality PE and sport in Bexley. All the facilities are available for the community to hire outside normal school hours. To find out more and to book, please contact the schools directly. Booking lines are now open for Woodside School, Westwood College and Hurstmere Sports College. Trinity School is open to school use and accepting expressions of interest from potential community users.
