Bexley residents are being asked for their views on a new strategy, which seeks to address the barriers faced by ethnic minority communities wishing to take part in sport and other physical activity.
The draft ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ Strategy looks at the difficulties currently faced by ethnic minority groups, and examines ways in which they can be overcome. It focuses on key themes voiced by many different community groups and proposes a vision of increased participation, increased awareness and increased equity.
Diversity and Inclusion has been developed, after the Council’s Sports Strategy identified minority ethnic communities as one of a number of target groups that face barriers to participating in sport and physical activity.
In order to achieve the widest possible consultation, the draft ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ Strategy has been translated into Punjabi, Turkish, Cantonese and Vietnamese.
As well as offering people the opportunity to comment in writing, the Council will also be holding several workshops in late November and throughout December to help people have their say.
Thursday 8 December, 2pm - Belvedere Community Centre, Belvedere
Saturday 10 December, 2pm - Erith Leisure Centre, Erith
There will also be an open ‘drop-in’ session between 10am and 2pm at Belvedere Community Centre on Thursday 8 December, and another between 10am and 2pm at Erith Leisure Centre on Saturday 10 December.
The workshops and ‘drop-in’ sessions are open to all, and people do not need to have read the draft Strategy to attend.
All comments on the draft Strategy need to reach Bexley Council by no later than Friday 23 December. Copies of the Strategy, in all four languages, can be downloaded at www.bexley.gov.uk/sportsandleisure Feedback can also be submitted online.
Copies are available, on request, from your local library, or by contacting Cultural Services on 020 8294 6963.
Feedback submitted by post should be returned to: Diversity and Inclusion Consultation, Cultural Services, Bexley Council, Room 41, Bexley Civic Offices, Broadway, Bexleyheath, Kent DA6 7LB.
Comments gained from the consultation will be used to facilitate an Action Plan for the Strategy, which will be developed in the New Year.
