NEW CHILDREN CENTRE

The new Children’s Centre in North End, Slade Green held an open morning to give neighbours a sneak preview of the new facilities. Work started on the nursery in March, and local residents have been watching closely as the buildings and play area has taken shape. Staff felt that it was time to invite them in so they could see how the project was progressing. During the day and into the evening guests were welcomed with tea and cakes and a tour of the centre. “We thought it would be great to give the local residents a first look at the building. The community has been extremely understanding during the building works and this was our way of saying thanks,” says Head of Preventative Family Services, Brendan Ring. “We had some really good feedback, including positive comments from families with young children who are already planning to use the Centre.” The new Centre will provide a 70-place day nursery and a base for information and advice on children’s services for the local community. It will be fully operational in the New Year. The nursery will accommodate children from three months old to school age, providing accessible and affordable part-time or full-time childcare. As a Children’s Centre’ the building will also offer a one-stop shop for parents to access a range of family support services, including healthcare, employment and training opportunities. The project was made possible through financial support from the Government’s Sure Start Programme, the Big Lottery Fund, Single Regeneration Budget contribution from the Woolwich & North Bexley Partnership, the local North Bexley Sure Start Programme, the London Development Agency, and the Bexley Care Trust. A further contribution has been made by Bexley Council who have been responsible for building the new centre on land made available for the project by Orbit Housing Association. The new Children’s Centre is adjacent to Applegarth House, Lincoln Close, Slade Green. Parents and carers interested in obtaining a full or part-time childcare place at the new nursery, or anyone interested in working there, should contact the Children’s Information Service (CIS) on 020 8856 5398 or e-mail cis@bexley.gov.uk
