Play your cards right
Trust Thamesmead launch playing cards aimed at teenagers in Thamesmead

Trust Thamesmead’s playing cards are not your average pack of cards, as not only are young people able to play card games, the playing cards provide interesting facts and contact details too. Topics include sexual health, bullying and drugs, as well as information regarding young people’s facilities in Thamesmead - the cAve indoor climbing wall, football clubs, youth clubs and more!

The playing cards were thought up by Trust Thamesmead’s Youth Forum who thought it would be a great way of communicating information to young people.

The cards have already been distributed to senior schools and they will be distributed to young peoples groups in Thamesmead in the next couple of weeks.

Readers can pick up a pack of playing cards from Trust Thamesmead, 19a Joyce Dawson Way, Thamesmead Town Centre.

Splash Park success
In its first full year of operation, Belvedere Splashpark, which closed for the season on 22 September, proved to be even more popular than had been anticipated. Over 10,000 people visited what is believed to be the largest free access public wet play park in the UK, which first opened for part of the year in 2005.

The Splashpark has not only received a prestigious Civic Trust Award but has attracted the interest of other local authorities throughout the country who are anxious to learn about the installation and management of such a facility, so they can follow in Bexley’s wet footprints.

The new Bistro area under the lime trees, the refreshment kiosk and special picnic areas ensured that a visit to the pool was an enjoyable family day out. Meanwhile, the water sprinklers, showers, bubble jets and sprays kept the children fully and happily occupied, along with a Treasure Island theme with a boat, an island and a lagoon.

Cllr Peter Catterall, Bexley Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Tourism, says: “I am delighted by the success of this fantastic project. Next year, weather permitting, we hope to make a splash by opening at Easter.”

Visitors to the facility have also been impressed with what’s on offer, as shown from the following feedback received from one visitor: “It’s a wonderful facility - safe, fun and totally unique for the kids. I hope you are getting lots of plaudits for the facility - they are well deserved.”
