Fantastic Fete
Age Concern’s Pop in Parlour had a ball at their fete, supported by Trust Thamesmead on Saturday 30 September, especially those who took part in numerous games of bowls on the group’s bowling green. They kept their strength up by eating the free food from the BBQ and had lots of fun looking around the stalls, including a Christmas stall, bric-a-brac, plant and flower stall and a Trust Thamesmead information desk, as well as guessing the weight of the prize pumpkin, which will come in useful with Halloween being only weeks away.
“We hold a fete every year to raise money for our Christmas meal,” said group member Diane Parrish.

KEEPING TABS ON £450 MILLION A YEAR
Although it only began its work in June, Bexley Council’s newly-established Audit Committee has already got to grips with the authority’s £450 million a year business.
The seven-member Committee is chaired by Cllr Howard Marriner, who has a background in internal audit in international banking. He is ably supported by members experienced in a number of financial and accounting disciplines from both the public and private sectors.
Bexley Council provides a vast number of services ranging from refuse to regeneration, libraries to leisure and from providing education for children through to social care for the elderly and vulnerable. It plays a key role in championing the interests of the community. Maintaining good systems of control and management are key to the successful provision of all these services.
The Committee has a focused work programme that includes reviewing the Council’s approach to managing risk and making sure that the Authority’s assets are fully protected. In addition the Committee oversees the Council’s accounting practice.
Bexley has been particularly active in clamping down on housing benefit fraud and has recently mounted a number of successful prosecutions that have resulted in jail sentences.
Cllr Marriner says: “We have been given the task of building on the Council’s well-deserved reputation for effective management and value for money.
“The creation of an Audit Committee puts Bexley on a par with the practice now in place in most leading UK companies. I am particularly pleased that we have in place an experienced team of councillors who will build on Bexley’s existing sound systems of management and governance.”
