Fire in car scrapyard
Fifteen fire engines and around 75 firefighters battled the blazes of a fire in a car scrapyard at Maypole Crescent, Slade Green, Erith. The Brigade was called at 4.17pm on the 22nd of September. Fire crews had to fight with deep pockets of fire throughout the evening and damping down the area in the morning. One acetylene cylinder was confirmed at the incident so a 200 metre exclusion zone was set up and surrounding business premises were all evacuated. An unconfirmed number of propane cylinders was also involved.

London Fire Brigade is calling for improved government controls over the safe use, signage and storage of acetylene gas cylinders. A fire involving acetylene cylinders causes major disruption in the capital on average once a month. If a gas cylinder explodes following a fire the resulting dangers can include a travelling fireball, flying glass and structural damage to nearby buildings.

PARKING IN BELVEDERE
Residents and businesses in the Belvedere area are being asked for their views on local parking after a number of complaints recently to Bexley Council about obstructive and dangerous parking, often caused by commuters using the station. The Council has been successful in obtaining funding from Transport for London (TfL) to review parking problems in the area. One possible answer could be the introduction of waiting restrictions (yellow lines), or it may be necessary to again consider implementing a CPZ. The new consultation exercise is the first step towards a decision. A detailed leaflet and questionnaire form are being circulated locally for return to Traffic and Parking Design, Bexley Council, Wyncham House, 207 Longlands Road, Sidcup, DA15 9BR by 1 November. Alternatively the questionnaire can be completed on the Bexley Council website: www.bexley.gov.uk/belvederecpz.
