OPENDOORS at Christ Church

ChristChurch experienced a most gratifying weekend, for not only did they have the newly conserved wall painting to interest visitors, but a unique exhibition of seven original acrylic paintings depicting the seven days of creation. These painting were specially commissioned by the charity ‘RE Today’ to illustrate their schools pack picturing Creation’ The images created by Kate Neal, are based upon Genesis chapter one and two. The pack consists of seven A4 glossy photo’s of the images, teaching activities by Pamela Draycott and Racheal Barker, and a CD. The pack is now on sale as a school RE resource. The display and lighting of wall paintings, unique stain glass window and the ‘seven days of creation’ produced a striking effect, and with live music and flower displays made the church a place of wonderment. The Chancel is of particular beauty. The Sunday evening concert was a most pleasant and gentle affair, with the Belvedere Male Vocal Choir rendering some old favourites, followed by the Christ Church Choir, In all some 850 visitors, including the deputy Mayor of Bexley & many local schools, passed through the doors over the weekend, from all over, including Hove, Sussex. It is considered a most enjoyable and successful event. The event was supported by Bexley Civic Society and sponsored by The Archdeacon of Bromley and Bexley, Arts Council of Bexley, Erith Town Forum and Orbit Bexley Housing Association. The Vicar and PCC of ChristChurch wish to sincerely thank all who made this such a cultural event for Erith. Charles Armitage

Flavours of Europe came to Erith

The formidable flavours of Europe came to Erith and Sidcup at the end of last month. A Polish baker, a Belgian chocolate maker and a Greek olive merchant were just some of the stallholders selling their goods at a continental market brought to the borough by market operator The Free Marketeers, in conjunction with Bexley Council’s Town Centres Management Team. Stallholders were in Main Road, Sidcup on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd September. This was Sidcup’s first ever market. The market also operated in Pier Road, Erith on Sunday 4 September. The market sold a wide range of food including cheese, olives, fois gras, wine, pates, saucisson, charcuterie and cider. Alongside continental goods there was some excellent British fare and home-grown produce including soup, honey, jam and chutney. In all cases, the food market tradition of ‘taste before you buy’ was applied.

GET A PLOT?
Allotment plots across the borough are up for grabs to Bexley residents, in an end-of-year, promotion. Anyone taking up a new plot between now and the end of the year can hire a Bexley allotment plot free until the end of December 2005. Now is the perfect time to start tending a plot. The recent wet weather means that the ground is beginning to soften, and ‘turning over’ the earth will allow the oncoming winter weather to break down the soil even more. Summer vegetation is also dying back, clearing the way for planting winter crops this autumn or seeds in the new year, leading to a bumper harvest next spring and into the summer.
