Daphnie Hall, counting up the cost
Ruined

Husband and wife, Peter & Daphnie Hall, fell victim to the 10th of September Floods, and are now counting the cost of the damage, which will run into hundreds. Mr & Mrs Hall from Sutherland Avenue, Erith, had their home filled with 3ft high sewage and rain water, after the main drain (and only drain to serve Sutherland Avenue) became blocked. Daphnie said “ I was upstairs at the time of the heavy rain, I didn’t think much of it, but when I looked out the of window I noticed a pool of water, so I went downstairs to check if everything was OK. To my horror the whole of the downstairs was filled with water. I tried calling the fire brigade but the wait was up to four hours. Fortunately, at the time a, Bexley council pumping truck drove past, and my son in law followed it” The pumping truck came to the aid of Mr & Mrs Hall as they pumped the water out, to prevent further damage. By this time most of the damage had been done. The downstairs room used as a utility room bore the brunt of the flood. The fridge had been floating on the top of the water, and the washing machine and tumble dryer both filled with the dirty sewage water. The carpet was ruined; clothes, electrical tools, the vacuum cleaner as too were other irreplaceable sentimental items such as pictures. The Boiler has now been condemned, and they are left with no heating or hot water. To make matters worse they are also left with a pungent smell from the sewage water, which they fear could be toxic. Because of these fears they’ve taken their insurance company’s offer of temporary accommodation of bed & breakfast.
