UNITED AGAINST INCINERATOR
Bexley & Districts Against Incineration Risks (BADAIR) and Gateway News have teamed up together to appeal to the Minister of State for energy to reverse his decision on the Belvedere incinerator. We are urging residents and all who are opposed to the plans to post their crisp packet or sweet wrappers along with the coupon below or a note stating “I AM AGAINST THE INCINERATOR AND I HAVE JOIN THE GATEWAY NEWS POST YOUR RUBBISH CAMPAIGN TO URGE YOU TO RECONSIDER YOUR DECISION”

BADAIR was formed in 1953 after the first Public Inquiry refused permission to build a 1.6 million tonnes incinerator proposed by Cory. At the time there were many groups opposing the burner and they joined forces to continue the fight under an umbrella group BADAIR.

There are many reasons why we are opposed to the incinerator. Incineration reduces recycling, the waste being burned is not sorted and anything thrown into a dustbin will go into the fire IE rechargeable batteries containing Cadmium.

The Minister of State for energy is under a remit to reduce CO2 emissions but has approved a system which emits much more than a gas fired generator, they call these plants ‘ combined heat and power’ (EG SELCHP at Deptford) but none of them provide heating for local houses that have cooling towers.

This incinerator will use diesel trucks to transport the waste from the jetty to the burner surely an environmental friendly plant would have an electrical conveyor belt system. Traffic will increase in Belvedere again increasing pollution and causing jams, during the 4 year building phase it could well grid-lock.

The level of lung problems in the area is already too high and the particles leaving the stack( 1.5 times the height of Nelson’s Column) will only increase this problem.
