CLLR IAN CLEMENT WRITES
It has been another busy few weeks but we have had some good successes to celebrate.
Erith’s new leisure centre won an award for its accesibility for disabled people. Sport England rated the centre top for the number of disabled people using the centre, and for it organising many events for people with disabilities. It is great to see the work of the staff at Erith being recognised by such an organsation and I hope the success continues.
The Council also secured five Green Flags for our parks and open spaces.
The Green Flag Awards were awarded to Danson Park, Foots Cray Meadows, Lesnes Abbey, East Wickham Open Space and Hall Place (which is managed by Bexley Heritage Trust). Flags are awarded to parks for being welcoming, safe and well maintained with the strong involvement of the local community.
Our Transport team just missed out on the honours at the National Transport Awards in July. We were nominated for our road safety work, but just missed out on the award. However, the Council was still nominated and rated as one of the five best Council’s for road safety, and it is a tribute to the hard work of our Road Safety team who work long hours in trying to make our roads safer. Regardless of missing out on the award, we are well ahead of the Government targets for reducing death and injury on our roads, and will keep the work up.
We have just completed the consultation on the future of Roman Way in Crayford. As the town grows the Council has been asking for residents views on possible changes to the road system and we will analyse the responses before my Cabinet colleagues and I make a decision in September or October.
