Plucky Trekkers Raise Cash
A plucky group of nine intrepid Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme youngsters recently undertook a summer challenge to raise money for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Jubilee Fund. The group, aged between 13 and 18, all members of the Duke of Edinburgh Award’s Open Centres at Sidcup and Erith, planned and walked a 32 mile (50km) trek along the North Downs Way near Maidstone. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is celebrating its 50th year in 2006. As part of the year the Jubilee Fund has been set up to raise money to support disadvantaged young people. The walk raised over £400 for the fund. Walk organiser and Bexley Council’s Assistant Awards Development Officer, Ben Bullen, says: “Despite blisters and sore legs, the young people overcame incredible challenges while raising much needed funds for others.” So far Bexley’s Duke of Edinburgh participants, supported by Bexley Education Business Partnership, have raised nearly £1,000 towards the Jubilee Fund through the sponsored walk, barbecues, a sponsored silence and a sky dive. Funding for Bexley’s Young
Young members of Bexley’s sports, arts and drama groups will have the chance to apply for funding of up to £3,000 from this autumn when the renowned Jack Petchey Foundation comes to Bexley. The Foundation works to promote aspiration and achievement among young people by actively funding and supporting a range of different youth organisations. The first programme offered to groups in the borough will be the Achievement Award Scheme which recognises the successes of individual club members. The award scheme is potentially worth over £3,000 a year to a club. The Council has organised a series of seminars on Tuesday 5 September 2006 at Erith Leisure Centre, Avenue Road to give representatives from local youth groups the chance to come along and learn more about the exciting programmes that the Jack Petchey Foundation has to offer. “This extra funding will offer a great deal of help to young people across the borough,” says Leader of the Council, Cllr Ian Clement. “I am looking forward to the seminars and I hope as many organisations as possible will come along to see if they can take advantage of this exciting scheme.” For more information, please contact Cultural Services, Bexley Council, Civic Offices, Broadway, Bexleyheath DA6 7LB.
