UNITED AGAINST INCINERATOR
Bexley & Districts Against Incineration Risks (BADAIR) and Gateway News have teamed up together to appeal to the Minister of State for energy to reverse his decision on the Belvedere incinerator. We are urging residents and all who are opposed to the plans to post their crisp packet or sweet wrappers along with the coupon below or a note stating “I AM AGAINST THE INCINERATOR AND I HAVE JOIN THE GATEWAY NEWS POST YOUR RUBBISH CAMPAIGN TO URGE YOU TO RECONSIDER YOUR DECISION”

BADAIR was formed in 1953 after the first Public Inquiry refused permission to build a 1.6 million tonnes incinerator proposed by Cory. At the time there were many groups opposing the burner and they joined forces to continue the fight under an umbrella group BADAIR.

There are many reasons why we are opposed to the incinerator. Incineration reduces recycling, the waste being burned is not sorted and anything thrown into a dustbin will go into the fire IE rechargeable batteries containing Cadmium.

The Minister of State for energy is under a remit to reduce CO2 emissions but has approved a system which emits much more than a gas fired generator, they call these plants ‘ combined heat and power’ (EG SELCHP at Deptford) but none of them provide heating for local houses that have cooling towers.

This incinerator will use diesel trucks to transport the waste from the jetty to the burner surely an environmental friendly plant would have an electrical conveyor belt system. Traffic will increase in Belvedere again increasing pollution and causing jams, during the 4 year building phase it could well grid-lock.

The level of lung problems in the area is already too high and the particles leaving the stack( 1.5 times the height of Nelson’s Column) will only increase this problem.

You can join the campaign by posting a letter at least once a month and displaying the ‘Post your rubbish posters in your windows at home’. Posters and coupons can be downloaded online at www.gatewaynews.co.uk/badair.

Guilty of benefit fraud
A woman who hid the fact that she had a husband who was in full time work when she made nine claims for benefit in 2001 and 2004 was found guilty of fraud after a two-day trial at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 31 July.

Clare Adams of Mill Road, Erith, who had entered a not guilty plea, was sentenced to 160 hours Community Punishment and ordered to pay £100 costs.

The prosecution, brought by Bexley Council and Capita Business Services, alleged that she completed nine benefit application forms between 2001 and 2004 for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. On the claim form she had declared that she did not have a partner who lived with her.

Checks revealed that her husband had lived with her throughout the period covered by the claims and that he had been in full time employment during that time. She had been overpaid £10,203.16 Housing Benefit and £1,964.63 Council Tax Benefit which has to be repaid.

Mrs Adams told the Court that she was not living with her husband at the time she submitted the claim forms. She said that he sometimes came to visit her, staying for three days or, sometimes, a week at a time, but that they were in fact separated. After hearing prosecution evidence the Court made a finding of fact that for the relevant period she and her husband were not separated.
