Belvedere Splash Park opened to the public on Saturday 13 August at 11.45am, in glorious summer sunshine.
Hundreds gathered at the former paddling pool which has been transformed into a state-of-the-art wet play splash park with more than £300,000 from Bexley Council. Open for all, children and families in Bexley will have free access to what is believed to be the largest public wet play park in the UK.
Bexley Council, Atkins (the mechanical and electrical consultants) and Sun Safe Play have been working hard over recent months to build this first-class water park, which has been designed to be fun and a safe place to play for many years to come.
The Unreliable weather has made working conditions difficult and unforseen problem meant the original opening date was delayed but now the park is opened for all to enjoy.
While computer technology will keep the pool in prime condition, the real fun will be in the new splash park where there’s a shallow paddling lagoon surrounding a desert island. Around this there is a large area equipped with a range of water sprinklers, showers, bubble jets and sprays.
Other improvements to the park include a kiosk for site supervision and the sale of refreshments, new tall secure boundary railings in keeping with the area’s conservation status, Picnic area with tables and chairs, an old drinking fountain, dating back to 1880 and installed by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association, has also being restored as an ornamental feature with funding from the Bexley Conservation Society.
Cllr Joel Briant, Cabinet Member for the Environment says: “I am extremely proud to see that the team’s hard work, effort and determination has paid off to deliver this fantastic new facility.
“The old paddling pool had clearly seen better days and the new wet play splash park is something for everyone to enjoy. I hope that as many people as possible will be able to visit the splash park to see with their own eyes a job well done.
