A BLAST OF SAILING

Erith Yacht Club youngsters were joined by those from Stubbers Young Mariners in a blast of Topper and Pico sailing at Marconi Sailing Club on the Blackwater in Essex. Erith Yacht Club have links with the club and organized the day so youngsters could gain further sailing experience. 15 boats took to the water helmed by youngsters ranging from age 8 to 16 years. They sailed across to Osea Island and back, twice. It was real Swallows and Amazons style. Two rescue boats made sure all was safe and after sailng the boats were reloaded onto the triple trailers, which carry 6 toppers at a time. All thanks to some dedicated adults who are children at heart.

GREEN CAR RACING

Jewson, the leading builders’ merchant, has stepped in to sponsor local Bexley Business Academy with a Green Car motor racing project. Students from the school, which was opened by Tony Blair in 2003, have built an electric car, which will compete in The Greenpower six-hour Electric Car Marathon. The competing cars are designed and built by secondary schools, using identical motors and batteries. Each team consists of up to six drivers and six pit crew, with each driver allowed to drive for up to two hours, but not less than 20 minutes. As well as sponsoring the car itself, Jewson is helping with transport arrangements in order to get the team to the race venues and has also agreed to supply materials for the team race track. Nick Ratcliffe, Jewson Regional Director for London said: “When I visited the school I was really impressed with the amount of effort put in by students and teachers and the degree of engineering expertise involved in building the race car. “Jewson has a history of motor-racing sponsorship including karting and 24 hour endurance racing, so we were delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor grass roots activity just down the road from our branch in Erith.” “The sponsorship, means that we can add a ‘Jewson’ car to the school’s racing team,” said Mike Rogers from Bexley Business Academy. “As well as providing excellent learning opportunities for the children, the racing car also enables them to compete against some of the top schools in the country. We could not do this without the help of our sponsors.” Cars are built to racing specification, including race suspension, and full harness seat belts for ultimate safety for the children. The cars are also environmentally friendly, being built from fibreglass made from woven recycled paper supplied by Dartford Composites and steel recycled from old school furniture. With heats throughout the country the race challenge will culminate in a national final to be held at Goodwood on October 18th
