A local clearance company and local residents Caroline and Wayne are outraged with the poor job Bexley Council refuse service are doing so much so they invited Gateway News to come and look for ourselve. On Fiday 19th August we inspected the house along West Street to find four houses where the dustmen haven’t collected even thought they were in clear sight. Another load was just left piled in the street untouched.
Caroline states “It has really come to light how insignificant we really are as a community to our council. Today is refuse day and many bags were piled ready for the dustcart. Unfortunately they were not taken away and when asked why not, was told by the dustmen that the bags were the wrong colour and they could not take them. After much frustration, ourselves being a clearance company, decided to remove this rubbish rather than it end up all down the street. The dustmen also are not apparantly responsible for returning our wheelie bins back to our property as I had to hunt for mine about 5 doors away. What exactly do these dustmen get paid for? What service is our council meant to offer from our council tax?
We are constantly informing the local council about rubbish strewn down West Street, Erith. The park is more than often a local dumping ground for shopping trolleys and household waste. More importantly the nearby small supermarket has no bin outside and consequently the neighbouring house has become a trash site.
I have been told since by Tony Stevens (street technician supervisor) the last bin was taken away broken, and cannot be replaced as there could be a chance of it being vandalised. We have many food outlets and cafes stretching the length of West Street (which incidentally have been approved by our local planning dept.) BUT NOT ONE SOLITARY RUBBISH BIN. I very rarely see manual road sweepers and if we are lucky enough to have a road cleaning vehicle it speeds down the road at 20mph in the middle of the road.
It bothers me greatly, as I live in this street and being a clearance firm we travel around a good many boroughs. I have never seen a town neglected as much as Erith unless of course there is a member of royalty visiting nearby.”
