Bexley’s Cyber Café for young people is to be re-launched at a special opening event later this month. The Cyber Café in Erith has been developed by Bexley’s Youth Service with help from Bexley’s new Youth Council.
The Cyber Café has been fitted with state of the art computer equipment that has been donated by the Council’s ICT partner Steria and funding from the Council’s Areas of Opportunity Programme. The Café, positioned underneath Erith Library, was officially opened by Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Trevor Perrin on 24 August.
Eight brand new computers with printers will allow users to surf the internet for research or fun, as well creating music or video editing on a state of the art Apple Mac computer. A quiet area has been set aside for study. Internet access is free for young people as is use of all the equipment and software including office XP. The Cyber Café will be staffed by youth workers. All the computers are fitted with security software to restrict access to unsuitable websites.
During the launch visitors will get to see the café’s new hi-tech video and music editing equipment in action. Future café users will be able to edit their own music, images and video and save them onto discs. A small charge will be made for printing and discs.
The café is not only a place to go on-line, it has already proved its worth as the regular meeting place for the Youth Council and the Disabled Youth Forum - Wicked Ideas. There are also plans for other agencies to offer a range of support and ‘drop in ‘ sessions. A fitted kitchen provides young people with the space to make their own refreshments. The café is fully accessible for disabled users.
Cllr Perrin is really impressed with the café. He says: “This is a great facility for the young people of Bexley. Our thanks go to Steria for all the equipment and support they have provided, I know that a lot of partnership work has gone into getting the café up and running. I hope that its success will go from strength to strength and that we will see the café being used for a whole range of activities.”

The Parish Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury, Slade Green is pleased to confirm that the Bishop of Rochester has announced the forthcoming appointment of The Reverend Ann Tarper to be our new vicar. The Service of Induction is intended to take place on 20th November 2005.
The Rev. Ann Tarper writes ...Over twenty years ago, for my first summer holiday after beginning ministry as a Deaconess, I made a quiet pilgrimage to the places in and around Kent associated with St. Augustine. It was his obedience to Gregory the Great’s wish that he should make “Angels of the Angles’” which caused Augustine to be called “The Apostle to the English”.
One of my clearest memories of that pilgrimage remains my visit to a picturesque, bubbling spring of clear, fresh water set in an expanse of rolling green grass close to the bay where Augustine and his companions landed. As I sat gazing into the deep water, thinking of Augustine’s courage in travelling to an unknown place and of the faith which was his soul’s support and motivation, I little imagined that, just fourteen centuries after Augustine, I would be called to the area in which he ministered, being given charge of a parish bearing his name in the Diocese of Rochester which he founded by consecrating his assistant Justus as its first bishop. Like Augustine, I do not travel without some trepidation, but also like him I value those with and for whom I work, endeavouring to share my faith and to open all eyes to see God. Making my home amongst the people of the parish of St Augustine, I shall be looking forward to ministering from the beautiful church, baptising, teaching, leading mission and outreach and presiding at the celebrations of the great Christian festivals as pastor and priest.
